The Caboose (Avenue A)

Brownwood, TX

The Red Caboose was the second railcar project we completed for Troy and Lisa Abernathy — and arguably one of the most challenging. Unlike the Conductor’s Quarters, this caboose was completely gutted down to the bones, giving us a blank slate inside a very unforgiving shell.

Following the historic direction established with the first railcar, our goal was to keep this space true to its era while giving it a slightly different personality. We leaned into the early beginnings of the Art Deco era, layering in warmth, texture, and thoughtful details to create a space that feels like a luxe, cozy hug — intimate, intentional, and full of character.

Despite being the smallest footprint of our railcar remodels, the caboose came with its own set of challenges: dented and rusted metal, structural limitations, and an abundance of windows that required careful planning. Every inch had to be considered, both functionally and aesthetically.

Today, the Red Caboose is an active short-term rental in Brownwood, uniquely situated on actual railroad tracks beside an active railway. Just across the rails sits the historic Brownwood Santa Fe Station, once a bustling passenger and freight stop — a reminder of the rich history this space continues to honor.

The result is a one-of-a-kind stay that blends nostalgia, comfort, and thoughtful design — and one we’re especially proud to have brought back to life.
